China’s study abroad market is full of opportunities, but it is also complex, as each province and city has its own cultural, social and economic profile. It is therefore essential for overseas educators to understand local nuances and tailor their post-pandemic student recruitment strategies accordingly.

To date, we have added Hangzhou, Chengdu, Shenyang, Nanjing, QingdaoZhengzhou, Wuhan and Chongqing to our coverage of China’s New Tier 1 cities. Each city is uniquely positioned in the study abroad market, requiring educators to adjust their plans and meet particular needs.

These monthly reports will enable a better understanding of the historical background to each city’s education, economic and demographic situation, and, most importantly, give in-depth information on the number of agents in each city as well as their size, destination countries of choice, year of establishment and student sending situation, including which types of programs they are promoting.

This month, we have updated the data for Xi’an – one of the four Great Ancient Capitals of China and home of the Terracotta Warriors. Now the capital of Shaanxi province and the most populous city in Northwest China, Xi’an is known for its well-developed manufacturing, tourism and service outsourcing industries. The city has the highest density of colleges and universities as well as the largest number of people in higher education of all cities in China.

Xi’an has numerous agencies, most of which are relatively active, a highly academic atmosphere and a large number of overseas students.
