Igor Skibickij, COO at BONARD, presented the current state of the Colombian student market at the Languages Canada webinar.

Here are the main takeaways:

  • In 2021, Colombia ranked the 4th largest source market for English language travel globally.
  • In the same year, Canada benefited from early border reopening – as well as perceptions that it was a safe and student-friendly country, a very important element for Colombian students – and gained market share from other destinations, predominantly Australia. Therefore, 43% of all student weeks generated by Colombian students in 2021 were spent in Canada.
  • The Colombian market has matured: students are no longer interested in just learning English but are also looking for further education abroad. One of the main motivational factors for Colombian students to study in Canada is the country’s high-quality pathway programs. Canada’s proximity, affordability and work opportunities also make the country particularly attractive to Colombian students.
  • According to statements made by Colombian agencies, some 70% of students choose to study pathway programsin order to enrol in universities. Pathway programs are among the most popular courses for Colombian students, followed by ELT programs that also provide students with practical experience.
