Australia: Visa fee and duration now front and centre post first carve out

The Australian Government raised the student visa fee to $1600. The highest amongst competitor nations. It relates to all visas, no matter the duration. This has now changed, and it has been a live issue, further changes are now being formally sought. The Home Affairs Department last week put into effect a reduction of the visa fee for all students from Timor-Leste and the Pacific Islands back to the original $710 amount. This is the first ‘carve off’ from the increased fee.
Canada: International degree graduates of Canadian colleges no longer have to meet “field of study” requirements for post-study work permits

The Canadian government has removed the field-of-study restriction for international students graduating from degree programmes granted by colleges. This allows more international students in colleges to apply for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), and it re-establishes a key competitive advantage for Canadian colleges. The field-of-study restriction, in place for several months, had put Canadian colleges at a severe disadvantage in overseas markets.
Europe & Türkiye: Cost impacting on Turkish outbound market as study in Europe grows in popularity

Students in Türkiye are keen to pursue study abroad, but cost of living and the possibility of part-time work is becoming increasingly important, according to a new survey of students which also shows the rising popularity of European destinations for higher education programmes and current visa trends. Budget problems were cited as the biggest reason for not pursuing study abroad plans, selected by 82.6 per cent, followed by general concerns about going abroad (63.8) and language barriers (52.2).
Greece & UK: York wants to upgrade Greek partnership to branch campus

A UK university is set to upgrade an existing partnership in Greece to a branch campus, following a change in legislation in the southern European country. City College in Thessaloniki has since 2021 admitted students to study University of York degrees, spanning subject areas including English, psychology, business administration and economics, and computer science.

Chinese students are increasingly choosing short-term study programmes in Asia, with study tour agencies ranking as the top recruitment channel and 92 per cent of participants finding programmes through these agencies. BONARD’s research reveals that Singapore (84 per cent) and Hong Kong (73 per cent) are the most preferred destinations for Chinese students seeking short-term study experiences. The appeal of these destinations to the participants included strong economies, established education sectors, and significant Chinese-speaking communities.
US: International students still see the U.S. as a top study destination post-election

The recent S. presidential election has positively influenced the perception of the country among international students. The research, carried out in February 2025, surveyed over 1,000 students from 43 countries and found that 52% of respondents now view the U.S. more favorably as a study destination. However, 26% reported a decline in their perception of the country.
Malaysia: Growth in applications for study in Malaysia in 2024

Malaysia experienced a 25 per cent increase in international student applications in the 2024 calendar year, largely driven by growth from Asia and the MENA region and for undergraduate study. The government body responsible for the promotion of the country as a study destination, shows that there were 81,812 applications received from international students in 2024, a 25.5 per cent increase compared with 65,208 in the previous year.
UK & US: Record number of US students apply for UK undergraduate degrees

A record number of US students have applied to study undergraduate degrees in the UK next year. Experts had previously suggested that UK institutions might benefit from international students being put off by Donald Trump’s new administration.
