As part of a slew of new legislation upon his ascension into the White House this week, Trump signed an executive order all but banning people from some – as yet unnamed – countries from entering the US.

China: China's international education landscape optimistic

As China continues to open up to the world, there is constant demand for high-quality international education, which is expected to expand steadily in the country, according to top executives at Harrow International School Shanghai. Shanghai's Pudong New Area, where the school is located, is home to a large number of foreign companies and institutions. Despite the influence of the pandemic, there were still nearly 12,000 foreign students at the basic education level in Pudong last year.

Canada, Toronto: Centennial College suspends 49 programs amid drop in international student enrolments

Japan & Asia: Japanese higher education needs a paradigm shift

Japan has a current aim of sending 500,000 students abroad by 2033, while hosting 400,000 international students. Most of Japan’s existing international students hail from neighbouring countries, with China, Vietnam and Nepal being the largest contributors. To find another 120,000 students by 2033, Japanese universities must broaden their reach, especially to populous Southeast and South Asian countries such as Indonesia, India and Bangladesh, and also countries in Africa.
